Who Picks Up Junk for Free in Massachusetts?

No company in Massachusetts hauls a house full of junk away for nothing — but four things really do get taken at no cost.

Short answer: no company in Massachusetts hauls a house full of junk away for nothing — but four things really do get taken at no cost, and between them they cover most of what ends up on a curb. The trick is knowing which pile is which before you start calling.

Free junk removal in Massachusetts, in one line

Anything with resale value or scrap value can leave your house for free. Anything that is only waste costs money to get rid of, because somebody has to pay the disposal fee at the other end.

That single line explains almost every confusing answer you get on the phone:

  • A clean sofa is an asset. A charity resells it, so the pickup is free.
  • A torn sofa is waste. Nobody resells it, so somebody pays the dump.
  • A rusted grill is scrap. It is metal, and metal has a price per pound.
  • A mattress is banned. Massachusetts took it out of the trash stream in 2022, and there is no free route left for it.

The four things that really do get picked up for nothing

1. A charity that can resell it

The Salvation Army schedules home pickups across Massachusetts at 800-728-7825 or through satruck.org, usually seven to fourteen days out. Habitat for Humanity’s Essex County ReStore takes pickup requests through a form on its site, with stores in Lawrence, Haverhill and Hamilton.

Both work on the same condition, and it is stricter than people expect: upholstered furniture has to be free of tears, stains and pet damage. If you would not put it in your own living room, they will not load it. Neither one takes mattresses.

2. Anything made of metal

Metal is the one category with a price on the other side, so it moves on its own. Washers, dryers, grills, bicycles, filing cabinets, swing sets, storm doors — a scrapper will take those off a curb without charging you.

Two catches. A refrigerator or air conditioner holds refrigerant that has to be removed by someone certified, which is why those often carry a fee even when the rest of the metal does not. And in Danvers, metal is specifically not collected with the paid bulky sticker: it goes to the Transfer Station at $0.10 a pound, or it waits for the free weekend below.

3. Your own neighbours

A Buy Nothing group, Freecycle, or the free section of Facebook Marketplace will clear a working dehumidifier or a decent bookshelf faster than any hauler. It costs nothing, and it is the fastest route for one or two good things.

It is also the route with the highest failure rate. People say they are coming and do not come, and the item sits in your hallway for another three weeks. It works for something somebody wants. It does not work for a basement.

4. Your town, on the right weekend

Danvers runs a Zero Waste Recycling Event twice a year in the Danvers High School parking lot at 60 Cabot Road, 9am to 1pm, with proof of residency at the gate. In 2026 the dates are May 2 and 3, and October 24 and 25.

What goes in free that day: metal, rigid plastics such as barrels, buckets and outdoor furniture, small appliances, textiles through Simple Recycling, and small electronics like laptops, keyboards, cables and phones. What still costs money at the same event: a TV is $30, a monitor or printer $15, a refrigerator, freezer or AC unit $30, a microwave $10. No wooden items at all.

The rest of the year, Danvers charges a $20 sticker per bulky item at the curb, bought at Town Hall or online, and you call the number on the sticker the day before your trash day. Salem charges $20 per bulk item or white good, booked with Waste Management at 800-972-4545, and publishes a hardship waiver form for households that cannot pay it — worth asking about at 978-619-5675 rather than assuming.

What is free and what is not, item by item

What you have The free route What it costs when free does not apply
Sofa, armchair, table in good shape Charity pickup, at your door $20 sticker in Danvers, $20 in Salem once it is torn or stained
Washer, dryer, grill, bike, filing cabinet Scrapper, or the free Danvers weekend $0.10 a pound at the Danvers Transfer Station
Refrigerator, freezer, AC unit Nothing reliable — the refrigerant has to come out first $30 at the Danvers event, $20 sticker at the curb
TV, monitor, printer Nothing $30, $15 and $15 at the Danvers event
Clothing, shoes, linens Textile collection, always free —
Mattress or box spring Nothing. Banned from the trash statewide since November 2022 $40 a piece in Salem; Danvers no longer takes them at all
Wood, deck boards, construction debris Nothing Not collected at the curb; priced by volume
Paint, chemicals, propane tanks Nothing Household hazardous waste day only — no hauler is allowed to carry them

The free offer that ends up costing you

Free junk removal ads show up every week on the North Shore, and two of them are worth reading twice.

The first is the truck that answers a Marketplace ad and takes only the metal. That is not a cleanout, that is a scrap run — the washer goes, the couch and the carpet stay, and you are back where you started with the hard half of the pile.

The second is the stranger who offers to take everything for nothing. Ask where it goes. If it comes off the back of a truck on a quiet road two towns over, the mail, the prescription labels and the boxes with your address on them go with it. A disposal receipt is worth more than a free quote.

What it costs when nothing is free

When the pile is mixed — and a garage or a basement always is — somebody has to sort it, carry it and pay the tipping fee. That is the whole price of the job. Ours starts at $70 for a single item, $279 for half a truck and $450 for a full one, and the number comes back to you from a photo before anyone shows up. The full price list is here, by item and by truck volume.

The honest comparison is not free junk removal against paid junk removal. It is a Saturday, a borrowed pickup, two Transfer Station trips and the mattress you still cannot get rid of, against one visit. Sometimes the free route wins. When it does, take it.

Questions we get every week

Does anyone in Massachusetts really haul junk away for free?

For scrap metal, yes — a scrapper makes money on the load. For furniture in resale condition, yes, through a charity pickup. For a mixed pile of household waste, no. Somebody pays the disposal fee, and if it is not you, that load is probably not going to a disposal facility.

Will a charity pick up my furniture for free?

If it can be resold. The Salvation Army and the Habitat ReStore both want upholstered pieces with no tears, stains or pet damage, and neither takes mattresses. Send a photo when you book — it saves a wasted appointment on both sides.

Is scrap metal pickup free around Danvers?

Usually. Metal has scrap value, so it moves without a fee. Danvers does not take metal with the $20 bulky sticker: it goes to the Transfer Station at ten cents a pound, or free at the Zero Waste weekends in May and October.

Why is there no free way to get rid of a mattress?

Because the state banned mattresses and box springs from the trash in November 2022. Every town now routes them through a recycler, and the recycler charges. Salem is $40 a piece; Danvers stopped accepting them at the curb altogether.

What if I only have one or two things?

Try the free routes first — a charity for the good pieces, a scrapper for the metal. If what is left is one heavy item, that is a $70 job for us in Danvers and the towns around it, and you get the price from a photo before we come.
